My first steps as a professional archivist were guided by retired CLIS professor Bruce W. Dearstyne. He taught me that archivists are managers, leaders, and sometimes visionaries. His courses emphasized user needs, effective approaches to archival appraisal, and how to run an archives program without running away the archivists. Instead of merely trying to dazzle students with stories from the archival trenches, he presented us with the realities, challenges, and opportunities for archivists in the twenty-first century.
Thereafter, students attending a library school with an archives concentration can take mostly, if not all, archives-related courses to best prepare for the profession. Any available course on records management will also be useful for academic archivists, as many institutions operate their university archives concurrently with a records management program. Courses that require students to complete group or individual projects at repositories are excellent methods to gain practical experience. To expand their breadth of knowledge, future academic archivists should consider taking library courses that focus on academic librarianship, collection development, website and database design, and management.
