What are the mechanisms for acquiring gender identity? I will discuss three that are traditional and one that reflects a more contemporary approach. First, according to classical psychoanalytic theory, fear of retaliation from his father causes the boy to separate himself from the mother to whom he initially develops an infantile sexual attraction (the Oedipal complex) and develop a gender identity in affinity with the father.
