Friends put our needs first, and that will explain why we have so few friends. We librarians simply refuse to understand the political process, in which one rewards for support and punishes for lack of support. Words are cheap, but words don't count. We could still build effective coalitions, but not without tough negotiation with our potential friends. I do not see that will or dedication in the field. It may even be, from the votes and discussions at our own "professional" meetings, that some of us agree that other people's needs come ahead of our own.

Although my work has ranged from scholarly research to editorial exposition, I am probably best recognized for my regular column called "White Papers," which has been published 10 times annually in the pages of Library Journal since 1985. Prior to that time I wrote a regular column called "Research and Reality" for American Libraries, and before that for the British journal, Information and Library Manager. I have also written or co-authored seven monographs, including textbooks and collections of case studies.
