Pressing his face to the driver’s side window, he tried the door handle, but it was locked and he had no key. The full water bottle inside suggested she had not yet returned from the run. A few steps away, just past a gradual curve, the path affords a clear view east for almost a half mile up the path. There was no sign of his wife. At the far corner of the parking lot, in the only space darkened by shade, a white pickup angled beneath overhanging limbs. The windows were rolled down, and a man reclined in the driver’s seat.

His most common method of attack was to pose as a jogger. After spotting a lone female, he ran toward her from the front while boldly staring into her eyes, then averted his gaze as he passed. Once beyond the victim, he acted quickly, pivoting and sprinting back to loop a ligature around her neck. Securing control from behind, he kept a tight stranglehold and moved to the front, sliding the knot around the windpipe, alternately choking and releasing pressure to control consciousness. Survivors recall passing out within seconds as their throats constricted.

It was inevitable. Someone was going to be hurt again. Now, lurking in the bushes, he noticed the woman approaching. She was slim, a white baseball cap covering her head, exposing only tips of blonde hair tied back. His pulse pounded faster, senses heightened. He remained still, frozen as if squeezed in a vise, until her footfalls pounded a few feet from him. He leaped out and bounded two strides. Despite music piped from her earbuds, the woman heard his approach and turned suddenly, screaming as he forced the garrote over her head.
